About Us

Clive Gasson - Event Organiser

Clive  - Your Event Organiser:

I'm your average 50 year old guy, lovely wife, 2 daughters and Ted the dog. I got into surfski paddling 6 or 7 years ago and have not looked back since. I now paddle 2 to 3 times a week with a great bunch here at Shoreham Surfski.

I have entered many events, never with much chance of winning the silverware. Therefore, I fully understand that being in the mid-field and trying to beat the guys and girls around you is as important to some competitors as being on the podium is to others.

For me, being able to spend time with like minded people, who love a great atmosphere and sharing post race stories is what makes makes attending these races so fun.

Why Now?

At 'Shoreham Surfski' the ritual is a Saturday morning paddle followed by breakfast at the cafe. For many years chatting over breakfast, the conversation has got back 'its a shame there is not a race round here....wouldn't it be good if there was.' So after been starved of events due to the pandemic here we are.

I run a company but have never run an event. So I have surrounded myself in great people to support me.  I'm doing this out of a passion for a sport I really want to share with others.

The A Team:

Dave Samuel, what a guy! Soo much passion from one guy.  Dave is Chairman of Brighton Surf Life Saving Club alongside an amazing team of people. He is forever the positive person, with so much energy for everyone in the community. And, with 20 years experience of running events such as 'Paddle Round the Pier' we can rest assured he knows what he knows how to manage things. Alongside him, Dave brings (BK) Keith Hopkins as our Water Safety Manager - who is also Jim's right hand man at the Epic Bay Race.

What Do the Organisers Gain?

Getting everything in place has taken up hundreds of hours of all our time. All of us have done this with no financial gain and without the generous support from Dave, his team, Tom and Jim, I would never have got this race off the ground.

Adur and Lancing Councils have also been really positive and proactive in their approach and support of the event, and we thank them for this.

We hope there maybe some small financial gains from the event which will all be donated to SLS Brighton.

What We Ask

What we ask is that you respect the fact we are all giving up our time for free to organise and run this event. Please be patient and supportive so that we can run more races like this in future.

We may not get everything right first time, but it won't be for lack of trying!

What's Our Aim:

Simple... for everyone to have great weekend!
