Ocean Surfski Race on beautiful South Coast

Course : Triangle course set on the day.
Distance : 14 - 17km, 3 laps (c.4.5km Laps).
Location : Lancing Beach Green, West Sussex
About The Race Event:
Welcome to the 'Sussex Classic 2022' the inaugural Ocean Surfski Race Event on the beautiful Sussex Coast.
A SLSGB event with the support of Brighton Surf Life Saving Club, Shoreham Surfski and with the full backing of Lancing / Adur Council.
A non profit event, organised for the Surfski community.
Any monies raised over will be donated to RNLI and BSLSC.
As this our first year and we want to get it right, we have limited competitors to 60.
Entrance Opens 21st April at 9am.
This is the 2nd event in the GB Surfski calendar and has been set up as the sister race to the Epic Bay Race in Exmouth. Check out Epic Kayaks UK website for more details of this race, due to be held on 21st May. Entries for both races opens the same day.

Team GB Qualifying Event
This is a Team GB qualifying event, please make sure you read details below if you want your entry to be counted for this.
GPS Event Tracking
GPS tracking will be attached to competitors, not only for competitor safety, but for friends and family to follow all the race action 'LIVE' on the day.

Competitors must be a Member of SLSGB (without it we could not insure the event.)
Competent Ocean Surfski Paddler - You must be responsible for yourself, and be able to self rescue.
Entry Process :
Click on 'Register Now' below to enter.
You will be asked for your SLSGB Membership Number. It is your responsibility to make sure this is valid on the 2nd July 2022. Unfortunately if this is not valid you will be not be allowed to race.
Once you have completed the online registration form, you will be sent details to make a BAC's payment, please send this to confirm your place on the start line.
Entrance Fee is £35 (£10 admin fee will be non refundable should the race be cancelled because of the weather. This fee is required for us to book event safety cover in advance).
Double Surfski Entry will be £50 for the boat entry.
We will then confirm your Race No and place on the start line within a couple weeks. At this point we will send you a competitor Information form. We ask that you complete and return this prior to the race to help with the admin on the day.
Min Safety Equipment
By signing up for the event all competitors confirm :
1) Their craft is suitable for the conditions and seaworthy.
2) Leg leash is mandatory. You are responsible for ensuring it is securely attached to your leg and craft.
3) A proper body PFD that complies to ICF standards.
4) Means of communication either VHF radio or mobile, charged and in working condition.
Items will be checked at Registration. No equipment no race.
This is an Ocean Surfski Race, and we are dependant on the British Weather, there is no plan B race.
We will be reviewing the race conditions in the 5 days prior to the event, and an update will be provided, on Facebook and / or the Website. If necessary a final call by the event team will be made 48 hours prior to the start of the race, and will be posted on FB and the Website.
Conditions that will likely cancel the event will be wind forecasted with greater than c.20knots in any southerly direction. The event safety team will call this and their decision is final.
Race Categories / Information :
There will be categories for both Men and Women in the following :
Under 18 (Must be 17 or under on the 1st Jan 2022)
Under 23 (Must be 22 or under on the 1st Jan 2022)
Seniors 23 - 35
If you are wishing to use this event as a GB Assessment Race you MUST enter one of the above categories. (Entries will be confirmed by the GB Team)
In addition to this we will have a class for:
Masters aged 35 (Must be 35 on the 1st Jan 2022) to 55
Veterans aged 55 (Must be 55 on the 1st Jan 2022) and above
Competitors between 23 and 35 must enter the Senior category.
There will be an open class for Doubles, should any combination of paddlers wish to enter.
Youth paddlers entries will need to be supported by your coach as competent to paddle in this category of race.
Prize Results - In the Category
For a prize to be awarded in each class there must be :
1st - 3 competitors on the start line for that Category.
2nd - 5 in the category
3rd - 10 in the category.
For categories with less than 3 in the Class will default competitors into the next category down. I.e. Veterans will go into Masters, Masters into Seniors.
Start - SLS Jump Start
60 Competitors will form a line up in the water next to their craft. When the starter is happy that everyone is lined up a ready, a flag will be dropped from the IRB lead boat (which will be in the middle of the start line on the water).
This will signal the start of the race. The lead competitor will follow the IRB onto the course and round the first lap.
Finish - Beach Finish
Competitors will return to the beach they started. They will see 2 Flags on the beach which will be situated a few metres beyond the water line. To finish the race competitors must cross the line carrying both their Surfski and Paddle !. Failure to have both ski and paddle crossing the line will result in being disqualified.
At this point you must return to the beach Marshalls both your Bib and GPS tracker.
All competitors must not leave the beach with either their Bib or GPS tracker. (we need to know your safe), this goes for anyone retiring from the race as well.

As the Lead paddler passes the Control Boat to exit the course for the 3rd time, a Single Blast of the horn will be given. All competitors will then complete their lap and return to the finish.
No of laps will be taken into account in the finish times.
Lancing Beach Green - Event Map
Competitor / Spectator Car Parking should be available on the Green, unless the weather has been wet and cars would then cause damage to the green. Alternative car parking will be the beach tarmac car park which is subject to their local fees.
Those choosing to park in the competitor area on the Green will be asked for car park donations on the day to go towards our charity partners. Suggested donations of £5 (or more).
